CAAS 200 Intro. to Black Experience 3 Credits
This course introduces students to the lived experiences of African Americas and the larger African Diaspora. It is designed to familiarize students to the socio-cultural processes by which Africans became African Americas and the concomitant cultures created in the Americas.
CAAS 301 Intro to African Amer. Studies 3 Credits
An overview of the discipline of African World Studies: popular and academic attitudes and approaches; its significant historical periods and its definable school of thought; the concepts of discipline, interdisciplinary humanities, social sciences, and area studies as relevant to African American Studies.
CAAS 302 Afr Amer Studies: The Mod Era 3 Credits
An examination of the African American historical, social and cultural experience in the 20th century, its salient periods (Harlem Renaissance, Black Arts Movement, etc.), arts (jazz, hip-hop, rap, etc.), and ideologies (integration, Afrocentrism, etc.).

Introduction to research methods and basic and current concepts of culture and value systems as applied to Africa and African-derived cultures of the Americas. Various cultures of the Diaspora are viewed as exemplars.

A survey of the principal characteristics of African-American folklore in its social, historical, and aesthetic contexts.
CAAS 550 African & African Amer Music 3 Credits
A study of the principal characteristics of African-American music with pertinent references to music on the Continent.
CAAS 560 African American Art 3 Credits
A study of the aesthetic tradition and the social context of African-American art.
CAAS 564 African Art 3 Credits
A survey of the basic forms and styles of traditional African art and a look at colonial and post-independence styles and trends.
CAAS 601 Directed Study 2-3 Credits

CAAS 617 Diversity Aware Prof & Coll Pr 3 Credits
Provides students with a background in cultural competency in preparation for working with a diverse student population and faculty at HBCUs, other institutions of higher education for culturally defined populations and predominantly white institutions of higher education and preparation for work in professional areas outside of the college community, focusing on civility and community engagement, cultural differences based on gender, race and class, sexual orientation, and religion.
CAAS 630 Sem. in Selected African Amers 3 Credits
Men and women of historical importance in the shaping of the African-American destiny or culture such as Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, and Alain Locke are studied in detail.
CAAS 640 Sem in Comparative Black Lit. 3 Credits
Selected research problems comparing and contrasting traditions in Francophone, Afro-Hispanic and African-American literature. Prerequisites: A reading knowledge of French; consent of the instructor: Reading knowledge of Spanish recommended (Cross-referenced with CFRE 640, CSPA 640, CENG 524).
CAAS 650 Ancient African Religions 3 Credits
A survey of selected body of literature pertaining to the religious traditions of ancient Africa, particularly ancient African religious traditions such as in Egypt, Ethiopia (that is, Abyssinia) Nubia, Meroe and Alodia.
CAAS 652 Capstone I 3 Credits
The course introduces students to concepts and approaches related to research in African-American Studies. Students will engage in intensive readings of classical and contemporary texts, which reflect the complexities of African-American Studies as the basis for learning the process of writing a thesis. Upon completion of the course, students will submit an approved topic, working bibliography and an introductory chapter.
CAAS 653 Capstone II 3 Credits
Students will engage in intensive readings of contemporary texts, which reflect the complexities of African-American lived experiences. Readings assigned in Capstone I and II serve as the basis for the completion of the project consisting of an approved topic, introduction, review of the literature and bibliography.
CAAS 710 Pro-Seminar in Africana Studie 3 Credits
This course introduces students to the discipline of Africana Studies by providing an overview of the social, political, intellectual and theoretical approaches impacting the black lived experience. The course serves as an introduction to African-American Studies with and is required of all students in the concentrations of African-American Studies and Africana Women’s Studies.
CAAS 801 Thesis Consultation 1 Credit
Direct advisement through individual and tutorial sessions with faculty in the completion of the thesis and research writing process. Students are expected to attend the tutorial sessions.
Prerequisite: Completion of Comprehensive examination and approval of department chair. Course may be repeated for credit.
CAAS 803 Res Methodology in Africana St 3 Credits
A variety of research, resources, techniques, and approaches to Africana studies are reviewed and assessed.
