The Ph.D. in Humanities curriculum provides two tracks:
- Humanities with a single-subject concentration;
- Humanities with a double-subject concentration.
Both tracks permit students to select a preferred program of study that supports their individual career goals. The program of study comprises the Interdisciplinary Humanities Core Requirements and the following
Concentrations:
These subject areas may serve as a primary concentration or a secondary concentration. Other approved subject areas can serve as a secondary concentration.
Program Objectives
- Train students who will become teachers and scholars knowledgeable in humanistic inquiry.
- Provide opportunities for students to further develop their skills as critical thinkers and research scholars with the knowledge and understanding of concepts and theories of the humanities disciplines.
- Provide opportunities for students to investigate interdisciplinary ideas in the humanities, including their exemplars.
- Further develop students’ knowledge and skills to conduct research in specific disciplines in the humanities.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants to the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Humanities must complete the General Admissions Requirements as published in this Catalog.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students in Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Humanities who have completed coursework and have fulfilled all the requirements of the program will be able to:
- Apply methodologies of humanistic inquiry to address current societal issues.
- Develop a rational philosophy of teaching and pedagogy to be utilized in and outside the classroom environment.
- Analyze and interpret the cultural production of past and contemporary humanist scholars and artists and their contributions to society.
- Engage in interdisciplinary research that addresses human concerns and their solutions.
Degree Requirements
Candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Humanities will complete up to seventy-two (72) graduate credits in interdisciplinary humanities and an appropriate concentration or concentrations, including the dissertation in residence. The general requirements for the degree include:

Includes Concentration Dissertation Research course (3 credits).
Other subject areas that can be used for a secondary concentration include political science public administration or sociology
Dissertation Consultation and Research: 6 Credits
Required for the completion of the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Humanities. Also fulfills Dissertation Research requirements in Humanities discipline and the concentration(s). Select two (2) dissertation courses in Humanities or one (1) in Humanities and one (1) in primary concentration.
