CHUM 209H  Honors Cultural Humanities  3 Credits  
Study of social, religious, and literary movements and the individuals who have contributed to the cultural development of modern day society. Satisfies General Education core requirement for humanities.
CHUM 228C  The Early Period to 1914  3 Credits  
This course focuses on the diversity of cultural experiences primarily in the United States. The class uses readings from a wide variety of disciplines, from anthropology and sociology to literature, philosophy, religion, and art. Students will learn to think critically in this class through writing short papers and classroom discussion. This section concentrates on the issues of myth and the making of history, the natural and unnatural, identity, individual and community and religion and belief systems.
CHUM 230C  Modern Period:WWI to Present  3 Credits  
This course focuses on the diversity of cultural experiences primarily in the United States. The class uses readings from a wide variety of disciplines, from anthropology and sociology to literature, philosophy, religion, and art. Students will learn to think critically in this class through writing short papers and classroom discussion. This section concentrates on the issues of education, work and economy, state and nationalism, social change, and pop culture.

Introduces fundamental concepts and methods of humanistic studies generally and those which are basic to various disciplines in humanities, including literary criticism and historiography.
CHUM 676  Person in History & Literature  3 Credits  
Examines the concept of "person" as a reflection of the ontological, ethical, and political premises of various cultures and epochs, and how concepts of personhood are embedded in historical and literary texts.
CHUM 677  Literature & Popular Culture  3 Credits  
Addresses fundamental questions about the nature of contemporary culture by examining the structures, myths, and genres of contemporary popular culture, including the role of cultural diversity in defining popular culture.
CHUM 678  Ideas & Exemplars  3 Credits  
Investigates the contexts and processes in which seminal ideas are created in a particular ethos, and the principles determining their transformation in subsequent epochs and diffusion.
CHUM 681  Higher Education in the US  3 Credits  
Considers the history, present status, curricular models and projections of higher education including significant trends in the operation and development of higher education institutions.
CHUM 682  Teaching & the Humanities  3 Credits  
Examines the principles governing college programs in humanities and various course designs, materials and strategies for achieving the ends of humanistic education.
CHUM 683  The Internship  3-6 Credits  
Examines the principles governing college programs in humanities and various course designs, materials and strategies for achieving the ends of humanistic education.
CHUM 684  The Internship  3-6 Credits  
Entails practical experience in applying the pedagogical principles, research, and methods studied in CHUM 681 and CHUM 682. In some cases, the internship requirements may be satisfied in one semester, in which case an additional content course may be taken in lieu of a second semester of internship. Whenever possible, the internship will be based in one of the required undergraduate core curriculum courses in Humanities or in one of the humanities disciplines.

Examines various pedagogical theories and approaches in the humanities and explores strategies for developing teaching philosophies, course designs, and classroom management and policies.

Entails practical classroom experience in applying the pedagogical principles, research, and methods studied in HUM 881.
CHUM 883  Science and the Humanities  3 Credits  
Explores the nexus between science and the humanities and what science can offer the humanities.
CHUM 885  Digital Humanities  3 Credits  
Explores the emerging methodologies for using the electronic media in humanistic study as well as electronic publishing in humanities.
CHUM 886  Directed Research  3 Credits  
Allows students to conduct individual research or participate in study abroad research under the guidance of a faculty.
CHUM 888  A Review of the Humanities  3 Credits  
Provides a comprehensive examination of the major issues, controversies, ideas, concepts and methods of humanities.
CHUM 891  Research Methods  3 Credits  
Considers qualitative and quantitative approaches to conducting research as practiced in the humanities, including broad discussions of issues of causality, validity, reliability, and the ethics of human research. The course also emphasizes current research methods in humanities.
CHUM 892  Research Design  3 Credits  
Develops the skills necessary to design and write a research project, develop and submit grant applications, fellowship applications, and a dissertation prospectus. Additional emphasis is directed on writing as a competent researcher.
